Waste problem in Ukraine

Waste problem in Ukraine

According to the amendment to the Law of Ukraine “On Waste” burial of unprocessed waste is prohibited in order to prevent negative impact  of waste on the environment  and human health.  These regulations came into force on January 1, 2018.

Local authorities must provide possibility of waste segregation by species. For the purpose of processing and further disposal, it is necessary  to put separate dumpsters everywhere. At least, the essential quantity of bins must be put for glass, paper, plastic and mixed waste. A prerequisite for solution of the unprocessed waste problem was the implementation of  EU standards for waste management.

There are 54 million m3 of waste in Ukraine (it is 7% of the country's territory) and only one-tenth of it is recycled.
According to different sources, the amount of plastic waste varies from  6 % to 14% of  total garbage, most of which are polyethylene and PET. This plastic is a valuable secondary raw material and sorting at an early stage greatly simplifies its further way to a repeat production cycle.
